The Rider Waite tarot deck was originally conceived by Arthur Edward Waite (2 October 1857 – 19 May 1942), commonly known as A. E. Waite. He was an American-born British poet and scholarly mystic who wrote extensively on occult and esoteric matters and was the co-creator of the Rider-Waite Tarot deck. As his biographer, R. A. Gilbert described him: "Waite's name has survived because he was the first to attempt a systematic study of the history of western occultism—viewed as a spiritual tradition rather than as aspects of proto-science or as the pathology of religion."
Pamela Colman Smith (16 February 1878 - 18 September 1951), also nicknamed Pixie, was a British interdisciplinary artist, illustrator, writer and occultist. She is best known for illustrating the Rider-Waite tarot deck of oracular tarot cards (also called the Rider-Waite-Smith or Waite-Smith deck) for Arthur Edward Waite, which is in circulation in over 20 countries making it the most popular tarot deck ever made.
This deck is based on the structure of the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot deck. It is a uniquely expressive deck that features magical imagery presented in deep, saturated colors. The borderless 78-card deck allows the details of tarot scenery and symbolism to be viewed from a close, intimate perspective.
The Morgan-Greer Tarot is the first modern tarot deck based upon the combined research of tarot leaders Arthur Edward Waite and Paul Foster Case. Artist Bill F. Greer, in choosing the colors for the Morgan-Greer deck so as to “create an emotional reaction to each card even before the image could be looked at in depth”, used the Casebook as a primer.
